Norman Pearson

Principal Tuba, Los Angeles Philharmonic

NORMAN PEARSON has been the tubist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra since 1993. In 1981 he joined the Orquesta Filarmónica de Caracas in Caracas, Venezuela and returned to Los Angeles in 1982 to pursue a career as a freelance musician. During that time he was involved in many performances with the Pacific Symphony, the Joffrey Ballet, the Los Angeles Music Center Opera, the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group, and a three-year appointment to the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1989-92) as a full-time substitute. He has also worked as a recording musician for many of the major motion picture and television studios. Additionally, he worked as a custom mouthpiece maker and designer for Marcinkiewicz Music products while the company was based in the Los Angeles area.Pearson is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where he was a student of Jim Self and the late great studio tubist Tommy Johnson. He also studied with former Los Angeles Philharmonic tubist Roger Bobo. He is on the faculties of the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music and the Colburn School.
